An Elm That Survived, and a Walnut's Roots
American elm was planted along boulevards like this one in the same era, and most of what's still standing here made it through a disease wave that wiped the species out across much of the country starting in the 1930s. A surviving elm this old is genuinely uncommon, and its stump often carries internal decay that grinds unevenly, softer in pockets rather than a consistent feed.
