A stump nobody's touched in a season, tucked along the back edge of a garden bed here, often has ivy climbing straight up the bark or a length of wild grape braided through the collar where the roots flare out. We cut that away before the machine ever starts, working close to where the vine actually grips the wood rather than tugging it loose and leaving trailing pieces scattered around. What we take on stops there, the stump and the few feet of ground surrounding it. A tangled fence line or an entire overgrown bed is a landscaping job, and we'll tell you plainly when that's really what's being described to us.
Vine Fights the Wheel, Bare Wood Doesn't
Send a grinding wheel into a knot of ivy or grapevine and it spends more effort wrapping fiber around the disk than actually cutting anything, unlike dry wood, which simply breaks apart under the blade. Stripping the growth first also shows us the stump's honest width, once whatever's grown over it in the meantime is out of the picture, so we're pricing what's actually there instead of estimating blind. A light amount of growth comes off free as part of the visit. A stump that's spent years buried under vine is its own conversation, and we'll quote that piece separately before touching a blade.
